Rose’s top 10 favorite movies (and why)

27 Oct

Well, since you now know my favorite actors and actresses, it only makes sense to now tell you my favorite movies and the reasoning behind it.  Here we go…

10. The Gods Must Be Crazy (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0080801/) A Norwegian film. Truly ingenious. The plot is very simple. A tribesman finds a Coke bottle and takes it back to his village where it is put to many uses. However, there is only one bottle to go around and it causes jealousy, envy, anger, hatred, and, even violence in the village. This movie is funny, it’s deep, and, it is a “must see” movie.

9. The Devil Wears Prada (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0458352/) Now hold your boos and hisses, yes, I know this is a VERY commercial film, and, I probably do have it on the list because it is such a great insight to the fashion world. Without naming names this movie is based on a real life “Miranda Priestly“. This film is not for everyone, and, there is a lot of inside industry humor, but, that’s why it’s on my list.

8. Breakfast at Tiffany’s (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0054698/) This is the movie most associated with Audrey Hepburn. Based on the Truman Capote novel, the story centers around Holly Golightly and cafe society. Holly has her fun by coaxing dollars from rich, older gentlemen, but, in the end doesn’t realize what she has until she throws it away. (I particularly like the symbolism of the cat in the movie.)

7. Roman Holiday (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0046250/) A fantastic cast including Audrey Hepburn, Eddie Albert and Gregory Peck. It’s the story of a Princess who decides to take a break from it all (think “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off“). It’s just a fun light-hearted movie that won Audrey Hepburn an Academy Award for Best Actress.

Roman Holiday

6. Schindler’s List (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0108052/) A heart wrenching movie that is extremely compelling. The basic plot is about a German businessman who saved the lives of more than a thousand Polish-Jewish refugees during the Holocaust by employing them in his factories. It is a movie everyone should see at least once in their lifetime.

Schindler's List

5. Pride & Prejudice 2005 version (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0414387/) The movie is based upon Jane Austen novel of the same name. The story centers around the Bennett family and in particular Jane and Elizabeth Bennett and their trials and tribulations of finding love. A true chick flick, but, one I love as much as I love the book.

Pride and Prejudice

4. Amadeus (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0086879/) The story of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart as told by Antonio Salieri (an Italian classical composer, conductor and teacher). There is a reason this movie won 8 Academy Awards. Just watch it and see for yourself.

Amadeus

3. Hotel Rwanda (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0395169/) The incredible true story about a a hotel manager who housed over a thousand Tutsi refugees during their struggle against the Hutu militia in Rwanda. By the end of 1994 more than a million people died in the genocide. It’s an unbelievable story.

Hotel Rwanda

2. Goodfellas (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0099685/) This mob-hit (pun intended) is not only based on a true life story, but, the acting, directing and every other aspect of this film is top notch. Every time you watch, you can see something new. A very worthwhile film that can be watched over and over again.

Goodfellas

1. La Dolce Vita (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0053779/) Yep the Federico Fellini classic wins my vote for best film. It’s gritty. It’s real. And, it makes you ponder your own life and choices.

La Dolce Vita

And so many more could be added to this list, but, this is my personal top 10 favorite movie list.  I suggest all of them to nearly anyone, but, especially lovers of good film!

Happy Hump Day!
