I love Paris…

7 Sep

After a long day of attending (instead of being in) fashion shows at Lincoln Center the past few days — yes it IS Fashion Week.  I came home to find Gary (my wonderful, thoughtful husband) had ordered Chinese food in and all I had to do is plop down and eat last night.  Over dinner we discussed how we have both turned into workaholics, and, we agreed we would plan a much needed vacation.

A cruise?  No, we’ve done those and are a bit burnt out on the idea of a cruise.  Disney? Cute but not a romantic destination.  Vegas???  Good for about three days before one loses one’s mind and/or one’s money.  Then almost simultaneously we both said “Paris“.

Perfect!  Romantic, lots to see and do, and, a destination that I haven’t been to in ta while.  Last time I was in Paris, I was modeling…  Which has led me to contact my friend – travel writer and publisher T.R. “Tina” Threston.  Unfortunately, Tina is out of town due to a death in the family, but, I am patiently waiting for her reply for recommendations for hotels and possible places to visit that off the beaten path.

In the meantime, I am doing some research on my own, and, thinking about a hathaway and tuccigreat line from “The Devil Wears Prada” — towards the end of the movie when Stanley Tucci‘s character of “Nigel” tells Anne Hathaway‘s character of “Andy” that he is going to “get to go to Paris and actually see Paris.”  And boy does that sum it up nicely for me.  I’ve been to Paris many times, but, to be able to visit and see things from a non-working perspective sounds like the perfect vacation for us.

I can’t wait!!

Emerald City…

31 Aug

Gary and I will be attending a charity fund raiser in December, and, normally I am pretty decisive about what I am going to wear.  I’ve never been one of those girls who plans her wardrobe out months ahead of an event.  I never even did that when I was single and dating.  I never even did it in high school.  And, for me to be thinking ahead about something I am going to wear in December and tomorrow is September 1st.  To say it is unusual is an understatement.

Here’s the thing.  I’ve never been a flash girl.  Ok, sure, that may sound odd coming from a former model who still works in the fashion industry but it is the truth.  I’ve always been more comfortable in a pair of jeans and t-shirt than a gown and diamonds.  That doesn’t mean I don’t love looking at the diamonds, it’s just that I’ve never been one of those “I have to get that” type of girl especially when it comes to jewelry.  Well, I am now at a crossroads.  I found an absolutely stunning necklace and I do mean stunning.  And, no, these are not real gems!  Gary’s last name is Donovan, not Rockefeller!  LOL   Anyhow, I am in love with this necklace, but, have not purchased it yet because I’m still looking for the perfect gown to go with it.

But I hope you can see how I could fall for such a necklace.  The kicker is that normally I’m not a emerald girl.  I prefer rubies or sapphires to emerald city…  Yet, for some reason this necklace is calling to me and I do admit it is perfect for the event we will be attending.  So now I have to find the dress….  Or simply have it made…  Kind of handy given what I currently do for a living.  Nonetheless, I had to share….  And I hope you think the necklace is as special and as stunning as I do. 🙂

Good news is the word of the day

27 Sep

Good news is the word of the day!  SFD Couture (which I co-own) made its first significant sale yesterday which means we now have capital coming in to keep ourselves afloat and now we concentrate on really developing and expanding the brand.  I cannot tell you how happy I am because we literally put our hearts and souls, not to mention all our money into this dream; and, to get a sale is like getting an endorsement that yes we ARE good and yes we DO know what we are doing!  It’s a great feeling!

I’d also like to give a shout out to a fellow writer on Examiner.com.  TR Threston has been nominated to several Who’s Who companies by none other than Donna McFarland — a well known and respected editor.  TR Threston also broke into the top 100 influential New Yorkers on wefollow.com.  It is my understanding she also has job offers from two major news companies, and, her KIVA team has met and is now exceeding its 2012 goals.  You go girl!

I’d also like to give a shout out to social media guru Jeff Cotrupe.  Thanks for following me Jeff and please keep in touch!  You find out more about Jeff on his website:  http://www.marketpowerllc.com/

Finally, I’d like to give a shout out to my BFF Elena and her husband Paul.  Both have been under the weather with terrible colds the past few days.  Hope you’re feeling better guys!

Yes, it is a good news day 🙂

Is it me or is Project Runway boring this season?

26 Aug

I’m not sure if I’m the only one who feels this way, but, I’m finding it very hard to watch Project Runway this season.  There really isn’t anyone interesting or overly talented.  Last year we had lots going on — like, dare I say it, Gretchen and her backstabbing…  And, rooting for Mondo and Michael C.

And, I’m tired of Heidi having the designers come up with products for her line of clothing.  I swear everything item (or nearly every item) I saw on last night’s episode looked like something Gretchen would have made — and if you don’t know by now… I’m no Gretchen Jones fan!

This season, I don’t know, I just can’t get into the show…  There are only two people who (I feel) deserve to be there… Anya Ayoung-Chee and Bert Kerrter — but what do I know 🙂  And, knowing that Heidi always seems to have her own agenda instead of truly looking for the best designers, it wouldn’t surprise me if both of these worthy contestants are eventually eliminated.  However, we shall see…

As for me, Fashion Week is around the corner, and, I’m waiting for a fitting as I right this… And, I better finish this up because they are almost ready for me.

Sending best wishes and prayers to my fellow New Yorkers and East Coasters that Hurricane Irene doesn’t hurt any of us too badly!  And God’s Speed to those in harm’s way.

Wedding update

23 Feb

Yesterday I publicly announced that I’m getting married.  And, for those who have emailed or posted on Facebook with congratulations, I thank you from the bottom of my heart.  I promise you Gary is a wonderful guy who has a great job, and, he isn’t after money nor a show business career.  He’s simply “the one”.

I’ve noticed one thing in my life, weddings come in spurts…  The last time I experienced a wedding spurt was about 3 years ago when a friend from college was getting married, followed by two of my cousins all within 18 months of each other.

This time… it began with my best friend in NYC, Elena when she announced her engagement to a wonderful guy from Australia last year.  Then over Christmas one of my life long friends who happens to be gay announced his wedding/commitment ceremony, and, now here it is me making the “big” announcement.

As for “where” we are holding the wedding- well that’s still up in the air.  I’m from suburban Chicago, and, Gary is a native New Yorker.  We both have large families and much of both families are scattered throughout the Country or in my case the world since I have close relatives in England and Ireland.  So, this is rapidly becoming an International affair, but, that’s actually a good thing.

I’ve already been contacted by no less than 3 dozen wedding planners, and, I’m getting bombarded with all types of wedding venue ideas.  It’s actually fun looking at the different venues because each is so unique that it would give the wedding a completely different feel and theme.  So we’re discussing everything from how big of a wedding we want to the type of wedding we want.

In the meantime, I’m gearing up to head to both England and Australia.  England is for work and Australia for Elena’s wedding.  I can’t wait!!

Stay tuned for updates!

Updates – yes it’s been a while

22 Feb

Ok, yes, I am a terrible person.  Well, maybe not a terrible person, but, terrible at keeping this blog up to date because my life is so hectic!  There is so much to tell I’m not sure where to start.

The last time I made an entry, I was telling about my Christmas cruise.  Here it is nearing the end of February, and, so much has happened between then and now!

My engagement "rock"

I got engaged for my birthday/Valentine's Day!

I got engaged for my birthday/Valentine’s Day to the most wonderful guy in the world.  We’ve known each other less than a year, but, we clicked instantly in nearly every way.  I feel very lucky to have found him.  And, no, just in case you’re wondering he isn’t an actor or professional athlete.  He’s just a regular guy with a big smile and even bigger heart.  And, I know this is one of those “forever” relationships, not one that lasts as long as we don’t hit any rough patches.  Rough patches are part of life and we’re both are ready to accept the challenges of marriage and family.

I just completed my first Fashion Week in NYC and had an absolute blast.  It was a a complete blur of designers, makeup, hair, parties and meeting people but I loved every minute of it.

And, believe it or not, I was tapped (during Fashion Week) to be part of a television pilot.  I will be a main character and here’s a stretch – my character is a model who is from the Midwest who moves to NYC.  Does this sound like the perfect part for me or what?  Now, just so you know a pilot does not guarantee it will be picked up by a network.  The networks only take so many new shows each year, but, production is in motion, and, I’ll simply keep you up to date if we make it or not!

So, to answer all your inquiries, yes, I am fine – it’s just been an incredibly busy time for me.  Please stay tuned, and, I will try to do a much better job in keep you up to date with my life and what is happening.

Thanks for reading, and, I’ll be back soon!  Promise!

Project Runway Finalists: Mondo, Andy, and….GRETCHEN??

Project Runway Finalists:  Mondo, Andy, and….. GRETCHEN?

Michael Costello, Project Runway
Michael Costello, Project Runway

In case you missed Part One of the season finale of Project Runway last night, Michael Costello was the one sent home and who will not be showing a collection at Fashion Week.  I have no problem with the judges selection of Andy and Mondo – both clearly deserve to be going – but, Gretchen?

No way.  Not in my opinion.  Gretchen’s designs are common at best, and, her back-stabbing attitude towards everyone else – especially Michael Costello – has been inexcusable.  Is this the type of person Heidi Klum wants to promote?  Really?   Someone who is snappy, self-absorbed, and, down right mean – not to mention a lack of talent.

I have been a Michael C fan ever since the wicked Gretchen started attacking him, and, tried to get everyone to agree with her.  Michael C may not have the training of the rest, however, one thing he did have was talent.  And, how the judges let Gretchen proceed to Fashion Week with her 1970s retro – been there, done that look – is beyond me.

My loyalty has now shifted to Mondo and Andy, and, I hope if Michael C ever reads this blog he knows that many of us – not just me – have the same feeling that Gretchen took his rightful spot.  I wish Michael C well, and, if he ever needs a model, I’d be more than happy to work with him!
